Painter Merewether, from the beach streets to the garden suburb
Your Merewether house either takes the salt off the beach or sits in the old garden suburb near Glebe Road, and often both. Corella Painting preps it for what it's up against and finishes it in two coats, from Adamstown, six minutes away.
In Merewether the paint has two jobs: stand up to the salt, and suit a street the council wants kept the way it was built.
Painting in Merewether
Merewether runs from the surf at Merewether Beach up through hilly streets to Glebe Road, and that range shows on the houses. Near the beach, weatherboard and steel take salt spray most days, and a north wall that faces the water chalks fastest. At the northern end, part of the suburb sits inside the Hamilton South 'Garden Suburb' heritage conservation area, where the City of Newcastle's DCP describes single-storey Federation and interwar bungalows in face brick and painted weatherboard, set back behind open front gardens. Between the two there are post-war houses, newer two-storey homes and a few unit blocks, each with its own kind of wear.
Prepping for the salt
If you live in the streets nearest Merewether Beach, you'll know what the air does to anything left outside. The same thing happens to your paint. Salt settles on the walls and the roof, draws in moisture and breaks the finish down, and the wall that faces the water goes first. You'll see it as chalk on your hand when you touch the boards, flaking around nail heads, and rust stains spreading from the screws on the roof.
So a Merewether repaint starts with a wash, to get the salt off before anything else touches the house. Then the boards are scraped back to a sound edge and sanded smooth, nail heads are punched, sealed and filled, bare timber is primed, and the paint goes on in two full coats. On the roof, every rust spot is brushed back and primed before the first coat, following the steel maker's steps. None of that is visible when the job is done, and it's what decides whether you're repainting in a few years or many.
Painting in the garden suburb
At the north end of Merewether, near Glebe Road, the houses are older and the rules are different. Part of the suburb sits inside the Hamilton South "Garden Suburb" heritage conservation area, planned in the early 1900s and built out mostly between the wars. The council's description of it is single-storey cottages and bungalows in face brick and painted weatherboard, set back behind open front gardens, and its controls are written to keep it that way.
For you, that mostly means two things. The painted parts of the house, the weatherboards, the trims, the fascias and the verandah, get repainted, and we help you choose a scheme that suits the age of the house. The face brick and any stone stay exposed, front fence included. Before we quote a colour change on the street front, we check your address against the heritage map and tell you whether to talk to council first.
Six minutes away
Our base is in Adamstown, about six minutes from most of Merewether. That's close enough to be on site before seven, to start after a morning shower once the walls have dried, and to come back for a touch-up without charging you for travel. On a coastal job where the weather matters, being nearby is part of doing it properly.
What we paint in Merewether
Charcoal over white
"The quote listed every coat and every surface. The bill matched it to the dollar. They found a rotten board on the south side, showed me, and fixed it before painting. The house looks new from the street."

Weatherboards on the beach side
Boards washed of salt, scraped back where the paint has lifted, spot-primed and given two coats, with the water-facing wall prepped hardest because it fails first.
Salt-chalked roofs washed by hand and keyed, rust around screws and laps brushed back and primed, then two coats, with a primer for the coastal exposure where the paint maker calls for one.
Interwar bungalows with picture rails, plaster cornices and timber trims, painted room by room. Outside, painted weatherboards and trims are repainted and the face brick is left as it was built.
Is my Merewether house in a heritage conservation area?
It might be, if you're at the northern end. The Hamilton South 'Garden Suburb' area covers parts of Hamilton East, Hamilton South and Merewether, between Glebe Road to the south and Gordon Avenue to the west. We check your address on the council's heritage map before we quote a colour scheme, so the colours suit the rules from the start.
Can we paint our face brick front fence?
Inside the garden suburb we'd advise against it, and we won't do it without council's view. The DCP lists exposed face brick and stone on house fronts and front fences among the things to keep there. Outside the heritage area it's your call, but painted brick has to be repainted from then on, so cleaning and repointing is usually the better fix.
We're a street back from Merewether Beach. Is our paint going to fail faster?
The wall facing the water will wear faster than the others, yes. We wash the salt off before we start, prime bare timber and metal with a primer suited to the exposure, and use a paint made for coastal conditions. Hosing down the sheltered walls the rain never reaches, a couple of times a year, helps it last.
How much does it cost to paint a house in Merewether?
For our jobs, a single-storey exterior usually comes to $9,000 to $18,000 + GST. In Merewether the upper end is usually salt damage near the beach, weatherboards with a lot of flaking paint, or a two-storey house that needs scaffold. Your quote lists every surface and coat, and what extra prep the salt side needs.
Our hillside block is steep. Is that a problem?
No, but it changes the setup. A sloping block often means one side of the house is a storey higher than the other, so we may need scaffold or a platform on the low side rather than ladders. We look at the access on the quote visit, and if scaffold is needed it's a line on the quote, not a surprise.
How soon can you come out?
We're six minutes away in Adamstown, so a quote visit is usually within a few working days of your call, and the written quote follows soon after. The start date depends on the season and the weather, and it's on the quote.
Tell us what needs painting
A few lines and a photo or two is enough. We'll ring to book a look, then leave you a written quote with every surface and every coat on it. No obligation, and no follow-up calls chasing you if you decide to wait a while longer.
